Nursing Gone Mad – Surplus of Philippine Nurses
No, the Nurses have not gone mad, but the Nursing degree is. Latest statistics released showed that of the 70,000 nursing graduates who passed the Nursing Board Exams in 2007, half of them are still unemployed.
If there is truth to this report, then this is very alarming. The Philippine Nursing Association (PNA) further disclosed that with the decline of Nurse demands in the United States and United Kingdom – the two biggest employers of Philippine nursing graduates, more and more nursing graduates end up unemployed, while many of them settled to work in Call Centers, retail stores and other non-professional positions.
It is about time that the government take action on the proliferation of many schools offering nursing courses – most of which do not even meet the criteria set by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) standards. PNA also added that some of these so called “nursing schools” are merely cashing in on the popularity of Nursing and are taking advantage of those students who wanted to work overseas. Parents are also part to blame, since Nursing is seen as the ticket towards working in another country to earn better income.
This oversupply of Philippine Nurses will continue as the United States have implemented a stricter rule since 2006 and decreased its requirements, adding to the “visa retrogression” problem. The U.K. has adopted a policy to hire local health workers.
By August or September, the Philippine Regulation Commission (PRC) will release the June 2008 Nursing Board Exam results and list of passers – that’s another batch of young, hopeful Nurses where a number of them will again probably end up unemployed or be employed in non-related jobs.
Let’s hope for a better future of our Nursing graduates and board passers. If you or someone you know is currently taking up Nursing course, what suggestions/decisions you’ll gonna have to make? Which career path should you take if you still have the chance choose one?
Would you consider earning passive income as well on top of what you are doing?

The US is suffering from recession and millions of people not only nurses lost their jobs in the last couple of months.

nice post Kuya Bloggista. maybe that’s the mere fact for now, a lot of registered nurses were not practicing their professions, we can see a lot of them working on call centers, malls and other jobs not related on their chosen profession.
Our Government should make a move for this.

I may have overstated the figure a little bit, but the fact remains that the Government do something about this. Perhaps one option is to offer other Skills Training/development programs. Good thing the BPO industry is booming so these Nurses still have better options for employment.

yeah lets blame the government because I chose to be a nurse and cant find a job.

. C’mon people, nurse is the most in demand job in the philippines. How come mawawalan sila ng trabaho. Di ba nga kulang tayo ng nurses at doctors. What gives?

is it the MOST in demand job in the phils? Err, the last time I checked, nurses are indeed having a difficult time finding jobs. hence, the rate of unemployed RNs is increasing. Nursing friends choose to volunteer and some even pay hospitals just to “work” – to gain experience. My other friends, for instance, had to sign themselves up for training in one known hospital and take note – due to the vast number with the same desire, they are scheduled for next year.
and my dear bloggista, regarding the booming BPO industry… well, when you have Nursing in your profile, you have that great chance of being rejected since call center companies now are skeptical about Nursing grads. Commitment to service, my best guess, is under scrutiny. Since most of them make it a training ground for the enhancement of their English communication skills or worse, like what an HR friend of a call center had informed me – they make it as “palipasan ng oras” particularly for those who are waiting for the Nursing Board Exam results.
But please, I am not referring to all. Just some. Or perhaps majority. Just my opinion. *peace*

heheh. Most nurses or nursing students find it harder to apply in BPO’s nowadays. Who would invest in training these people when it’s already a given that they would eventually pursue another path, say, 6 to 12 months from date of employment.

Last time you checked, how? asked them one by one? Of course they’ll say that they cant find a job. They’re looking for the big catch every time. My sister is a nurse, there are a lot of hospitals offering her to serve, she just doesnt want to work in a low paying hospital which all of the nurses think about that’s why they end up unemployed looking for that 1 big shot.
Like you said, your friends want to work in a known hospital that guarantee bigger salary than normal. Its a self issue.

Ako kasama sa mga nurses na unemployed..hehe..pero I guess another good alternative if nurses don’t want to go abroad is being a medical transcriptionist. Nagwork ako nun for 7 months, nagresign ako kasi balak ko na magwork as a nurse. :-S

Oversupply of Nurses in the Philippines cause widespread unemployed registered nurses….

Its not a bias view I believe. Try talking to nurses. They have this mentality. They expect and want to go abroad after they graduate so they get messed up pag di sila makaalis. They thought there’s this one magic bullet(going abroad) in getting the best in life.
There’s a lot of opportunity anywhere you go. Even if you stay here in the Philippines, there is still a lot of money to be made. Ever wondered why Filipinos go abroad to work while Americans go here to do business?

Bloggista, my wife is a nurse and packet 3B na sya. we’re just waiting for time. when we look at the visa bulletin, “U” pa ang date na nakalista since a few months ago. Unavailable pa mga visas coz the US has a quota and there’s a “retrogression”.
But the US still need nurses. New bills are currently filed in the US.

Right now sa insurance ako nag trabaho, and I am happy here, and going to the hospital would be my last choice, because I have been trying to apply for 2 years pero wala pa din kahit isa ang tumanggap sa akin,, hehehe wala naman akong pambayad sa training fee nila huhuhu, basta it does not matter where you work, as long as you are happy and doing great thins hehehe.. sa mga kapwa ko nurse… Kaya natin ito,, nurse tayo.. flexible and adatable !!! ciao!!

its in reality that we lots of nursing graduates but end within a call center industry and i have lots of them before but after a few weeks they dissappear one by one maybe thinking wasting time and degrading themselves but the main reasons is where theyre going to apply lack of hospital who can hire them.

The truth is, we have an oversupply of nurses and relatively less to no demand in domestically. Abroad? thats what every nurses is dreaming and hoping it can come true… Those who persevere do have the chance to live that dream. Persevere through constant waiting and spending more and more only to satisfy that dream…. Perhaps, we now be awaken with what is happening… Opportunities is everywhere…Your “Acres of Diamond” Maybe is just beside you… Nice blog though.

hi..:D i think the govt is doing something bout this ordeal lyk this certain program implemented in DOLE, the “nurse sa brgy” thingy..bt un4tunately the salary is still delayed and many RNs are assigned to far flung areas for months away from their homes.also, its a shame how hospitals these days offer few vacant slots for novice RNs.
despite of these, i dont regret finishing nursing.though im working with low pay (less than 3000 a month with no benefits) i still love my work..as long as people exists nursing will too.so cheer up future RNs.:D

This article is really nice. I’m a second year nursing student and I regret my decision for being a nurse. I’m currently studying at a top notcher school in terms of board passers in hope that this would give me a chance to go abroad. Our second semester is about to start this october and I’m thinking about stopping my studies. One semester of nursing in our school costs 40 up to 80, 000 per semester. And my parents already spent more than 200, 000 for my studies and yes I felt really guilty about it. My two cousins are graduates of nursing and they are currently working as call centre agents and my brother told me that he forsees what I would become after graduating.
>_<
Sobrang dami na ng nurses ngayon that even my professors in a non- nursing subject advices us to shift courses…
Well, sana i shifted course earlier because I'm already halfway to the diploma.
I hope na mabasa to ng mga fresh graduates na nagbabalak mag nursing,,, Nursing is a high vocation of arts and sciences aiming to serve thy humanity but it requires a lot of sacrifices.

Grabe, 40K to 80K per semester? And you still have 2 more years to go?
I don’t know but I guess you have to do something. That’s a lot of money spent for something – well, not too promising. If you think u will like designing or software development (PHP programming – its easy and there’s plenty of opportunity), you may want to spend some extra time learning these stuffs. Or try enrolling in short courses on PHP programming , it won’t cost a lot, but in about 6 months you can already start earning some money.
