How much is a good CPM rate?

By bloggista

In the world of online advertising, CPM impression rates (cost per mille or cost per thousand) are what most publishers and advertisers agree upon. Of course for the Advertisers, getting the best lowest CPM rate is ideal – but all this depends on the volume and quality of traffic a Publisher’s site is able to generate on a daily basis.

Again, measuring the the quality of traffic is important – and top 3 authority on measuring and ranking a site’s reach and traffic are Alexa, Google Page Rank and Technorati.

I have been looking around to check what would be the ideal CPM rate – for a site with no ranking, and for sites ranked under 100K by Alexa, or sites with Google Page Rank and for sites with Technorati rank as well.

And these are what I found:

For new sites – and sited not ranked: Usually it’s under a dollar per CPM, in some cases may reach up to USD4.00 but Advertisers do not gamble that much.

For newly ranked sites (close to 100K in Alexa ranking, Google rank of up to 2):USD1.20 to USD2.50 on the average and may go up to USD8.00.

For mid-ranked sites (under 100K in Alexa ranking, Google rank of 3 to 6): USD4.00 to USD8.00 on the average and may reach USD10.00 in some cases.

For high volume sites (usually ranked high in Alexa, with Google rank of 4 up): The unconfirmed ‘standard’ CPM rate plays around USD10.00 and may reach to USD20.00 or more in some cases. That’s 0.01 to 0.02 cents paid to the Publishers per 1000 ad impressions. (edit: per ad impression, not per 1000 ad impression)

However, there has not been any published authority on CPM rates – though I’m still new to this, somebody may wish to share with me if there’ already one out there.

CPM rates may vary depending on a site’s reach, visitors demographics, media and technology used and several other factors.

Will continue to do a research on this.

I think your are a little off on your calculations are a little off.

“The unconfirmed ’standard’ CPM rate plays around USD10.00 and may reach to USD20.00 or more in some cases. That’s 0.01 to 0.02 cents paid to the Publishers per 1000 ad impressions.”

If the CPM is $10 then the publisher will be paid $10 per 1000 impressions.

Bloggista – Yeah you’re right. I must have been dreaming while typing those. The figure should be 0.01 to 0.02 cents paid per “ad impression”. Thanks for pointing that out my friend.

btw. You mean to say “That’s 1 to 2 cents paid to the Publishers per 1000 ad impressions.”

Having the decimals make it look like it is only costing .01 to .02 of a cent.. I wish it sounded that good to clients!

Hmmmm…. my CPM says a whopping $54. Either all my relatives around the world are clicking stuff and following through and buying stuff, or something is wrong?

I just started earlier this month, but have a rabid passion to post quality content.

Can someone please say where you can find these CPM rates. I have been looking around, but don’t even get close to these rates. I see CPM rates of around 30-50 ct.

If a name is not the way to go, point me in the right direction please.

    Thanks

Rates are of course always changing with the markets, and CPM rates overall are lower in 2009 compared to 2008.

This is an interesting analysis based on the reach of a site, but it does ignore the importance of targeting. If an advertiser is interested in more than just reaching any audience, but instead in reaching a specific audience, then a smaller site with a targeted audience can command higher CPMs than a large site with an untargeted audience. Large sites will segment their audience to allow targeting to bring up the CPM rates too.

Do you have any updates on the current industry CPM’s? I’d appreciate getting some current data on this 10/25/09.

I think the content you write about and the sites reader demographics makes the biggest difference.

A blog about Real Estate or Money Lending will have a much higher cpm than a blog about bird watching as there is a lot more money to be made for the advertiser.

I think this factor has a much higher importance for the advertiser than how many daily impressions a site has or it’s Alexa rank or page rank. They are paying for the amount of impressions anyway.
