Queensland needs 120,000 skilled workersThe global financial crisis has affected many Overseas Filipino Workers and Professionals, with fears of massive layoffs in Macau, Taiwan, the United States, Europe and in many other countries. Due to the unavailability of jobs in the Philippines that gives “decent pay” to its citizenry, Filipinos have been known to be one of the large groups of people looking for jobs in other countries.

This exodus of professionals have benefited the host countries since Filipinos are known to be skilled, diligent and effective at what they do. But on the other hand, it has benefited the country whose economy have been partly dependent on the inflow of cash remitted from overseas foreign workers.

But a few days ago, while I was checking for the Nov 2008 Nursing Board Exam results in Google, I spotted a news over at ABS-CBN online reporting that Queensland, the second-biggest state in Australia is needing 120,000 skilled workers.

Excerpts of the news story:

The state’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) export office recently held a job mission in Cebu to encourage workers to consider working in Australia, particularly in Queensland.

“There are so many investments and development, yet there are not enough people who will take up the available jobs in Australia,” said Katherine Mernane, director for the export office. VET is composed of the local and national government, employers, as well as training providers.

… workers would be needed in tourism and hospitality, business, accounting, hair dressing as well as in health and community services. Queensland has a 4-million population.

… high demand for workers in the transport, forestry, water, energy and industry development sectors.

… Australia is “well-positioned financially” compared to other developed countries that are in the midst of the global financial troubles.

Also highlighted in the report is the biggest advantage of Filipinos – the ability to speak English. Click here to see full details of the news story.

I think Australia is not as hardly hit by the global financial crisis than the US and EU countries. This is great news!

Yeah, especially with those new graduates of Nursing who just took the board exam last november. Some reports are saying these batch of examinees are the biggest yet in Nursing history. But would a nurse settle for some caregiving job if there is no available nursing job abroad?

Nice question about the nurses B! Personally, I believe nurses will settle for caregiving jobs lalo na kung medyo matanda ng kumuha ng nursing. Like yung mga nasa 35 and above?Do you agree with me on that? :(

Sounds good…let’s see what the hiring will bring this coming 2009 about Australia. I’m not being cynical here but I guess I’m one of the few who still likes to work here in our country despite of the difficulties. Sobrang patriotic…hahaha… ^_^

I too chose to stay rather than work abroad, despite the bigger opportunities there. I don’t know but I can’t stand the thought of working in another country and miss your family, friends and some of the conveniences one would enjoy in the Philippines, like the sun, the beach, the barrio, the fiestas, the carabaos, ilog at lubak lubak na kanto. :-)

        Precisely B… :D

Indeed there is no place like home! I also love being with my family, friends and having a stroll at the mushroom-sprouting malls around the metropolis. I love living here despite of the poverty and the manipulative politicians. Filipinos too are most resilient type of people in the whole wide world. ;) (Naks, patriotic na patriotic! :D )

australia’s economy is strong but they can’t explain why their currency is depreciating against the US$.

i saw the article about the 120k need of workers at the dole website this morning. i even thought of blogging about it but did really have the time to do so.

No doubt about it, the AUD$ has slid back against the USD$ since the high in July 2008 where it was almost on par dollar for dollar.

So in an ideal world it is also about quality of life and cost of living.

Four of the ten most liveable cities surveyed by the Economist Intelligence Unit are in Australia.

Even better if you get to be able to travel and live in Australia and The Philippines..enjoy the best of both worlds…ask us how.

I had several offers before in Australia, but it never really appealed to me. Just don’t know why, but choosing between the US or Australia, I’d choose the latter.

The pressure in my place is mounding. I keep on thinking about going overseas because everyone here had been doing it. I noticed that I don’t get to meet bloggers who live in my place – unlike in other places. Some of them are from Baguio but they get to move out to other countries already.

Anyway, I’ll check out that job opportunity. I just hope that Canada is still okay, we all know about that financial crisis that the world is having.
