Should The President Be Given A Salary Increase?

peso ninoy shadow 250x207 Should The President Be Given A Salary Increase? How much does the Philippine President get paid? Currently, the Philippine Republic President is receiving Php60,000.00 (about USD1,333.33 at Php45.00 to 1 USD exchange rate) monthly. This is how much I pay for a mid-senior Developer/Programmer (PHP/Java) monthly. If compared to the President of the United States, as of 2001, the US President’s salary is about USD400,000.00 annually – or almost 3,000% higher than his Filipino counterpart.

But it doesn’t make sense to compare the salaries of a US President against a Philippine President. It doesn’t make sense at all why for just Php60,000.00 monthly, politicians are “dying” and spending millions and even billions of pesos to become a Philippine President.

Of course the reasons are obvious, aside from being the “Most Powerful Person” of the land, you get the opportunity to serve. (Laughing my ass out loud). Plus, you get to live in the Malacanang Palace, the most secured residence in the country. Also, you get Billions of pesos in Discretionary and Development funds, and other Budget Allocations at your disposal.

If you are greedy and play with the Devil, you get access to billions of pesos worth of contracts and government spendings and purchases – which perhaps could offer you some nice commission and “tong-pats.” If you are not greedy and shun Evil, chances are some of your relatives and friends and even family members do the tango and dance the cha-cha with the Demons.

There’s more and take the Poll after the jump.

Last week, Government Officials from the Malacanang thru the DBM proposed an increase of wages and salaries of government workers. Some officials also hinted that because of the low salary of the Philippine President as mandated in the 1986 Constitution, government employees increases cannot go as high as well. Funny, but probably true.

Whether you agree or not to the reasoning, the question remains: Should the President of the Republic be given a Salary raise? Forget about performance and honesty and credibility – which is very important key indicators in the private industries when it comes to giving additional benefits and salary increases. One gets fired in the private sector if you lack those.

What do you think? Feel free to leave your comments and take some time to participate in the Poll.

Thank you.

imagine that, for Php.60,000 monthly, presidentiables spend millions of pesos. And lets brace our selves once a bill gets to become a law where we voters will have to subsidize campaign spendings in 2010.

In reality, a president don’t bother about the salary at all since all his/her spending are subsidized by the state.

Have anyone heard of a president complaining about the salary?

Even if everything is provided for, I still think the salary should be at least comensurate to the responsibilities a President must do. Its like running a company, one big company. I find it morally wrong for the President and the presidential family na umasa nalang sa estado. The PResident should be given an increase, and by saying that, all Presidential Family members should shun holding public office, either elective or appointive, for delicadeza’s sake.

PHP60,000 a month should be what a congressman is getting. The president should get at least PHP1 million a month. However, very stringent punishments should apply if these politicians are caught of impropriety.

This is how it is done in Singapore and it definitely seems to work. Give the politicians an incentive to sit in power but also a huge disincentive to engage in corruption.

I clicked yes BUT a current president must only increase the salary of succeeding presidents (or his/her next term). I think there’s a policy about that somewhere and for good reason. Imagine our leaders (president, senators, and congresspersons) having the power to increase their OWN salaries.

We can’t compare our president’s salary with that of the United States’. Salaries should be based on the economy. America has the biggest economy in the world so they can afford to pay their president that much.

So any president of our beloved Philippines should first work to get the economy up and running in his/her first term and then ask for a raise for the second term.

definitely not! i really don’t pay much attention to the performance or whatever… the only thing is that is it practical for the country for now… i believe we are not that economically viable yet to that!

Who cares? With or without increase, President or Brgy. Chairman, people in the government only look after for one reason in joining the politics – POWER! *roll eyes*

  16. Janet on November 6, 2008 at 11:09 pm

Given the amount of emotional and psychological stress that goes along with the job, I think that an increase is most definitely warranted. The job is a 24-7 no time off job. Even when they go on what is termed a “vacation,” they are still on duty. Look at the past presidents and see what they looked like going into the office versus what they look like when their term is finished and its appearent how much of a toll the job takes…

    • toro on January 5, 2009 at 4:28 am

dude! They look even better as time goes by! they corrupt more and more money! Yes, you are right regarding emotional and psychological stress because they worry too much how they can find a way to steal money from the people and how they can take advantage of the so called “POWER” they have.

Regarding 24/7 job?? I don’t think sleeping is a job.

Haha! I don’t think so! Let’s just put it this way, since, all the politicians are corrupt! let’s not pay them a single penny because they corrupt millions and millions of pesos anways. Whatever the salary they’re getting it’s just a front even though it’s so obvious that their salary is just nothing. They make more money through corruption. Whether they deny it or not, I know for a fact that everybody knows where their money are coming from! CORRUPTION!

Let’s stop this game! Somehow, it’s the peoples fault too. DO NOT elect somebody just because they are famous! Be knowlegable and elect the right president if there’s one! I DON’T THINK SO>

  19. Lynne on February 6, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Just like in any kind of employment, the salary should, ideally, compensate for the work load. Roles with more responsibilities and more decision-making that affect lives of millions and even generations to come sound like the toughest job.

But the more troubling issue apparent in these posts is the fact that millions of pesos are spent just to get that Seat. People rationally invest because they think the pay off is higher. In other words, those who run for office and invest a lot of money do not really want to serve but to be served. There is yet to be one in office that have a selfless interest.

Corruption is obvious here whether we can substantiate it or not. Because if there is no corruption, our land that can be considered as one of the most beautiful, naturally rich, wealth bounty and intelligent people-endowed, should be the place every Filipino would Prefer to live in. But it is not.

But the saddest part is, those who know that this is not a poor, hopeless country as we are misled to believe and can do something to effect change if united can only post comments for now…
